The 82%: New poll results show that 82 percent of respondents do not want the super committee to cut spending on defense programs, including programs for soldiers and veterans. In addition, the POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Poll shows that more Americans would oppose efforts by the super committee to cut defense than would oppose the committee’s efforts to cut entitlement programs.
In the same poll, 83 percent of respondents said they are concerned about across the board spending cuts to all defense, with 27 percent saying they would be “extremely concerned” about across the board defense cuts.
Washington Post: "Take their warnings seriously"
Just last week the Washington Post Editorial Board echoed that same sentiment of poll respondents by advocating for a stop to further defense cuts. Citing testimony from the nations most senior military officers, the Post called for the super committee to refrain from cutting more from defense because of the dire warnings issued by the chiefs. “It would be an unconscionable act of political irresponsibility to allow their predictions to come true,” the Post Editorial Board said.
“True, the Pentagon brass are known for pushing hard for their funding. But they rarely speak in such apocalyptic tones — and there is good reason to take their warnings seriously,” the Post said.
