WASHINGTON- Ranking Member Mac Thornberry (R-TX), made the following statement on the United States Strategic Approach to the People's Republic of China report recently released by the White House. The report was required by the FY2019 National Defense Authorization Act, which mandated a whole-of-government strategy with respect to China.
“The Administration’s report is a good first start to articulating a whole of government approach to China. Only by focusing on all elements of national power can we effectively compete with China and deter China’s malign activity in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. The strategy also reinforces the need to invest in the military elements of that strategy, as well as increased engagement with our allies and partners.”
Earlier this year, Rep. Thornberry released a proposal for an Indo-Pacific Deterrence Initiative, modeled on the European Deterrence Initiative, and is working for its inclusion in the FY21 NDAA.
